If someone is trying to write a report, a research article, story, and novel or trying to make an assignment, there are some useful guidelines which can be helpful. Writing a short summary about your actual writing is a useful way of explaining the main idea of the writing. These short summaries of the writings are called abstracts. Abstract is a self-contained, short, and powerful statement that describes a larger work. By writing an abstract the writer can attracts the attention of reader more powerfully.
Summaries are common in all kinds of writing, usually appearing at the end of a chapter or article, highlighting the major points of the actual writing and outlining the significant details. However, writers use many other forms of summaries too. In business writing, for example, reports often begin with a summary. In academic writing, essays, articles, and reviews also begin with a summary very often. These summaries help readers also, allowing them to know the main parts of the writing. So they get a choice to read the whole writing or not. So writing an abstract also benefits the readers along with the writers. There are six main objectives of writing an abstract. These objectives are purpose, scope, method, results, recommendations and conclusions. Abstracts are neither too long nor too short.
The two most important objectives of writing an abstract are selection and indexing. It is very important to understand that abstracts are not reviews. Abstracts allow readers to quickly decide whether it is worth their time to read the whole writing. Many online databases use abstracts to index larger works. Therefore, Abstracts should contain keywords and phrases that allow for easy searching. There are two types of abstracts, descriptive and informative. A descriptive abstract contains the type of information found in the work. It makes no judgments about the work; it does not provide results or conclusions of the research. It does incorporate key words found in the text and may include the purpose, methods, and scope of the research while informative abstract presents and explains all the main arguments and the important results and evidence about the complete writing. An informative abstract includes the information that can be found in a descriptive abstract but also includes the results and conclusions of the writing and the recommendations of the author.
