<strong>What Powers ChatGPT and Google Bard: An Overview of Large Language Models (LLMs) </strong> July 8, 2023

In today’s digital era, artificial intelligence has made remarkable progress quickly. Language models are the primary reason that has pushed the boundaries of AI.

In today’s blog post, we will focus on language models and find out what exactly they are, how they work, and examples of the most used large language models in detail. So, keep reading this article to get familiar with the large language models.

What Is a Large Language Model?

A large Language Model, called LLM, is a massive database of textual information that can be used to create human-like responses to your prompts. This textual data comes from various sources and can contain many words.

The most common sources used in it are:

Literature: Large language model includes a vast amount of classical and modern literature, mainly covering books, poetry, and plays.

Online content: A massive repository of online textual data such as blogs, web content, and various other types of online content is also contained in an LLM.

News and current affairs: Many LLMs also cover current affairs and news topics. However, a few LLMs, like GPT-3.5, don’t include such textual data.

Social Media: Social media serves as a great resource of natural language, and therefore, LLMs use text data from major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

However, it is essential to state here that having a massive database of text is one aspect, but training LLMs to use this data to generate human-like responses is also essential. The following information will help you know how a large language model works.

How do LLMs Work?

Many of you might have this question: how does LLM work? Well, the process starts by evaluating the data using deep learning. This process is mainly focused on identifying the patterns of human language.

This also includes the process of gaining familiarity with grammar and its syntax. Learning the context is also a critical part of large language models. These LLMs also use a text database with a combination of Natural Language Generation techniques to generate human-like responses.

Examples of Popular LLMs

The advancement of artificial intelligence is mainly supported by large language models. The vast praise and continuing innovation have made AI reach a point of critical momentum. Now, there are plenty of LLM models. A couple of them are shared below.

1. GPT

The Generative Pretrained Transformers is a learning language model developed by OpenAI. This model, without any doubt, is the most popular LLM in recent times. GPT-3.5 supports the ChatGPT platform and is used to generate human-like responses. Similarly, GPT-4 is now accessible through ChatGPT paid subscription. Microsoft has also started using this modern LLM in its Bing Chat platform.

2. LaMDA

Google announced this LLM at the 2021 I/0 keynote. However, this LLM got public last June. Google’s AI chatbot, Bard AI, also used this LLM initially. However, the version Bard was first ruled out was considered a “Lite” version of the large language model. This LLM was outdated by the powerful PaLM iteration.

Major Applications of Large Language Models (LLMs)

The most popular LLM applications include:

1. ChatGPT

OpenAI developed ChatGPT to provide people with advanced AI capabilities that help them perform their crucial tasks. This AI Chatbot is developed to evaluate and learn the context of a conversation and generate accurate and relevant responses.

The extensive pre-training text data enables ChatGPT to identify patterns in a natural language exquisitely. That’s why it is widely used to create chatbots, translate language systems, and other software requiring NLP. This AI chatbot can create natural language responses that you can compare with the ones generated by humans.

ChatGPT is a highly popular artificial language model that creates human-like responses against users’ inputs. This AI chatbot is trained to generate text using a vast dataset of text and code. It also can generate creative text formats like poems, codes, emails, letters, and social media posts.

Moreover, the AI Chatbot can provide you with an appropriate response even if your queries are complex and vague. This AI chatbot is in the development phase. Still, it’s used widely by millions of people for several purposes, including blog writing, resume building, code generation, etc.

2. Google Bard

Google has also developed a large language model chatbot named “Bard”, which can generate various types of content, translate languages, and offer quick answers to queries relevant to different fields. This AI Chatbot is trained on a vast database of textual data and code. The artificial intelligence research branch of Google created this AI chatbot.

The major difference between ChatGPT and Bard is that Bard has a real-time internet connection, but ChatGPT doesn’t. Similarly, Bard generates a more informational response as compared to ChatGPT. This ChatBot is also in the development phase and launched in a few countries for testing purposes.

The Future of Large Language Models (LLMs)

The large language models (LLMs) will shape the paths for us to interact with technology in the coming future. ChatGPT and Brad receive a great deal of appreciation for their contribution to these LLMs. However, we cannot say that AI will replace humans in the near future. But, we will take their assistance more often in performing our official and professional-related tasks.

It is a debatable topic if we discuss the methods to integrate these AI Models into our lives. But, if we mainly focus on the coming future, a few expected developments in the large language model include:

● Improved Contextual Awareness

LLMs are developed in such a way that they can train themselves automatically. The more feedback they will get, the better they start performing. With the progress in technology, we will observe an enhancement in their language capabilities and contextual understanding.

● More Efficient

LLMs have billions of parameters, and we are still searching for other reliable resources. With the expected day-by-day enhancement in technology, they are expected to become more efficient and reliable. The response time will also increase over time.

● Accuracy

In current times, LLMs are prone to errors. But, with more advancement and upgrades, they will provide you with better and more accurate results. It will make them play a crucial role in different domains of our lives.

● Integration

It is expected that these large learning models will start working as virtual assistants that assist you with all your personal and professional tasks. Moreover, they will help you manage your timetables and suggest ways to handle complex situations.

Conclusion:

Google Bard and ChatGPT are two highly popular AI Chatbots powered by LLMs. Billions of people use these AI Chatbots to handle various tasks. However, Bard is considered a better option than ChatGPT in various aspects, such as internet connectivity and the ability to offer more responses. But, ChatGPT outshines the Bard in accuracy and language support. But, we cannot deny that both LLMs can modify the patterns of interacting with computers for humans.

Therefore, we cannot say which of them is better. It depends upon your needs and preferences and the nature of your query. If you are looking for more responses against your query or real-time data, then Bard is a better option. But if you want a more accurate response, you should go for ChatGPT.
