Why Is It Important to Contextualize Plagiarism?

Contextualizing of the act of plagiarism literally means appropriation of this act by law. The question; why is it important to contextualize plagiarism, can be best answered by quoting the fact that plagiarism is the major practice which greatly destroys the originality of some remarkable work done by someone. Mainly, it is concerned with the purloining of the work of any other author and then it is published as it is without referring to the source from which it was taken. It is not only the text which is copied and taken from the original source but also the thoughts, languages, expressions and ideas are copied and used by another source and published under another name.

The major idea related with the contextualizing of plagiarism is that the definitions and rules of this practice still remain unclear. This act has not been included in the formal legislation and therefore no such rule has been passed so far by the legislations of the constitutions of country. This is the main reason for which this act flourishes and therefore destroys the identity and originality of the literary works presented by the original authors. As a result the purity of a work is greatly jeopardized due to this act. Basically the concept of contextualizing the plagiarism was begun in the 18th century in Europe.

Since that time it has been involved to a great extent in practice. This practice was initially involved in destroying the originality of the basic ideals of the English and Roman literature. In these respects it was regarded highly immoral act. The first and foremost attack of plagiarism was on the Romantic Movement in the 18th century. On academic grounds it is considered to be a high level dishonesty because it can really hamper and destroy the academic as well as professional career of a student. This practice can have long term negative effect on the academia. Similarly when the ethics of journalism are considered and studied, plagiarism is also discouraged in that field as well and it is considered as a great dishonesty and a criminal act. In other words it is taken as a non compliance act in journalism. This act in some parts of the world is subjected to penalties and sometimes expulsion as well.

In some contexts the act of plagiarism is considered to be a seriously immoral act as well as the stealing of literary work. However it is not filed under the cases of theft and no legalization can be proceeded until copyrights are not availed against any work. In these cases the case of plagiarism can be filed and complained under the terms of copyright infringement. This is the major step taken in order to contextualize plagiarism.

Due to inclusion of intellectual texts and properties over time, it has become important to judge the originality of the documents being added on daily basis. This can simply filter and separate the original text from the plagiarized one and in this way the doctrine of morality and purity can be maintained. The easiest way to avoid the problem of plagiarism is to add citation in the document referring to the original source of information.
