Art Articles August 18, 2012

Defining the phenomena of art is a complicated task. Not only because there exist hundreds forms of art but also because art to each individual is different. For instance, the term art can be described as a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities but subsequently arts can also be described as a vast subdivision of culture, composed of many creative endeavors and disciplines.

So, we have art as a creative human activity or subdivision of culture. But, it is seen that in both these forms, there is mainly creating using imagination. It is an imaginative, creative, and nonscientific branch of knowledge. The artistic author is trying to create and produce beautiful objects. In most cases, the author is using his art as a form of expression, or social interaction hence art in its true sense is a way of human expression, a way of speaking to audience. Art is also used as a connection between God and man in many cultures and regions. Specifically, Indian culture takes art as a bridge of communication between the Creator and the created.

We can categorize if we must art in three categories; visual arts, literary arts, performing arts. Visual art includes arts such as drawing, architecture, painting, conceptual art, and in modern times photography also comes under this category. Literary arts are related to literature, which is basically the art of written work. The word literature literally means “acquaintance with letters”. The basic classifications of literature are poetry, prose, drama, both fiction, and non-fiction. Last but not least, are the performing arts, in this the artist uses his own body, face, and presence as a medium. Music, theatre, and dance are basic form of performing arts. Nevertheless, arts such as acrobatics, busking, comedy, martial arts are also included in this. All these mediums of art are a way of expression. They employ devices to represent our world, to imitate reality but most importantly to lead us towards our own imagination and creation. The true and finest form of art is the one which allows creative self expression. A painter will paint picture or painting expressing a thousand words, an author will write a thousand words for this expression, and a performer will perform to express him. All kinds of artists are simply trying to express themselves using drawing, writing, movement, or other mediums. All forms of art create images that speak more than what is being seen, more than a picture on a canvas, more than words on a page with characters and a plot, and surely more than a mere movement.
In many cultures art has a unique body of myths and legend to support the view that art occupies a central place in their society and religion. For instance, people of India recognize arts as a bridge between the divine and day to day life and society. For such cultures, art is considered as a spiritual journey leading to nirvana, and a form of collaboration between God and man.
